My random opinions on the whole Don Imus debacle, in no particular order:
- Why did he say that phrase (which I won't repeat here)? To generate controversy and, therefore, ratings.
- I have heard a lot worse than what Imus said from a lot of of different sources. Not that what he said wasn't horribly offensive in and of itself. I'm just saying.
- Isn't it funny that all the articles decrying Imus make a point of repeating what he said. Isn't that worse than him saying it?
- Do I think he should have been fired? Yes. It's about time someone is held responsible for their comments.
- I love that Imus actually said "I am tired of apologizing." Mel Gibson said the same thing. This makes me think that perhaps their apologies aren't all that sincere.
The thing that amazes me the most about the whole Imus thing is that he still had an audience to hear the comments in the first place.
ReplyDeleteAlso, should I be holding my breath waiting for Jesse Jackson to apologize to those Duke lacrosse players who he pilloried for a year who were recently found innocent?
Imus, the has-been was just the camel's nose under the tent. They really want to get Limbaugh, Hannity, Levin and others off the air. That was and is their ultimate goal.
ReplyDeleteThis only happened because Coultergeist didn't get fired for her nasty remarks about Edwards. The mob demands blood, and so forth. Am I defending Imus? No way. Just acknowledging that 'better' have said worse.
ReplyDeleteThere's been a lot of reactionary, "Well, Fifty Cent says it, too!" going on from the knuckleheads rallying around Don Imus, and that has to be the most flawed argument I can imagine. The arts should not be held up as a mirror for the press, and anybody who thinks that the two are compatible, well, I don't know what to tell them other than, "Um...no." Now, if you want to put Fifty Cent in front of the mic on a daytime-airing news talk show that pulls in family-friendly ads, then yeah, what Fifty Cent says in his songs will get him fired. And on that note, if we're so worried about what our children listen to and how it's going to force them to act out what they hear, why haven't we banned Martina McBride from the radio yet?
Some more points:
ReplyDelete1. I'm all for freedom of speech. But I can't stand when people abuse that right in such a stupid and silly fashion. Ann Coulter probably has a team of writers working on horribly offensive things to say just so she gets her name in the paper. I think that she believs what she says, but she does it mostly for the press.
2, Ann Coulter is the antichrist. Now, does that statement said after the last one show that I am a hypocrite, ironic or truthful. You decide.
3. Imusheads aren't the only ones saying that. I read an article where a rep frim the NAACP said that, in the sense "how can we get upset when other people call us that when we call ourselves that".
4. Imus getting fired isn't a slam against freedom of speech. He works for a company. The company can fire him if he is in danger of costing them money. Nuff siad.
5. If you are worried about your kids listening to Fifty Cent (or Martina McBride for that matter), make sure they don't listen to them. Parental responsibily, catch it.
