Movie: Pirates of the Carribean: At World's End and the previews before it.

The wife and I finally got around to seeing the latest Pirates movie. We thought the last one was good, but needlessly long. But we both wanted to see how the story ended.

This one got pretty bad reviews and much of the criticism was the same as the last movie. But how did we like it?

I liked it. Surprisingly, quite a bit.

Sure, the first half hour seemed to suffer from the same needlessly dragging out the shots. It was like "Here's people getting hanged, here's more people getting hanged, here's even more people getting, now with a song, here's Singapore, here's more Singapore, here's even more Singapore., okay, now here's an Iceberg, now here's more of the iceberg, now here's even more of the iceberg."

Seriously, they could have cut these scenes down and made the same point and the movie would have moved faster.

But once Captain Jack gets reunited with the rest of the characters and the double dealings and backstabbings began, the movie became quite fun. Granted, it was hard to follow the motivations for some of the switches. The action scenes were good and the wedding scene towards the end was hilarious. And some of the more emotional moments in the film rang true.

Will there be a sequel? They do leave the door open for it, and in such a way that not all the actors need to come back. So I's say that would be a good bet.

Now, the trailers:

  • Bratz: Yeah, had to sit through this one twice in one day. I wasn't happy about it either.
  • The Golden Compass: Saw this one before. Not familiar with the book. I like how they are trying to tie it in with the Lord of the Ring trilogy, even though as far as I know, other than the studio no one from that series is involved in this one. It's like "Hey! I know that this looks like a kid's movies, adults, but if you liked LOTR, you'll like this one. Think of the little girl as a Hobbit and everything will be alright!"
  • Ocean's 13: The funny part about seeing a movie that has been around for a while is that you'll see trailers for movies you've seen and reviewed.
  • Surf's Up: This has been on the list of movies that we could see for the last couple weeks (obviously, not very high because we have yet to see it).We might not have that many more chances.
  • Evan Almighty: Again, seen it at reviewed it.
  • Underdog: Pity my poor wife, because I might be dragging her to see this when it comes out. I loved the cartoon back in the day, and the trailer looks fun. The cast is pretty good too. Peter Dinklage is inspired casting as Simon Barsinister. And I believe that Steve Carell does the voice of Underdog. It sounded like him, but no one is listed as his voice on IMDB (SIDEBAR: I used to think comic message boards where all the yahoos used to go to bitch anonymously about stuff unfairly, but no comic board I saw has ever contained as virulent anger as the IMDB boards. Between this movie and the Nancy Drew one, you'd think and armed uprising was imminent).
  • Ratatouiile: Like I said earlier, the Wife and I will probably see it within the next two weeks.
