I rant about the All-Star Batman article in the Wall Street Journal

Yes, the All-Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder was recently a focus of an article in all places, the Wall Street Journal. Comics being covered in such a storied periodical has impressed a lot of people. But not me. Why? Well, because I don't impress easily. Because I'm a bit of an ass. And also, for these reasons, which I will organize in convenient bullet point form.

  • The title of the article is "Holy Bats in the Belfrey, Batman!" I think that says enough.
  • The WSJ is far too conservative for me to have too much respect for it.
  • The writer of the article seems to believe that Batman hasn't really changed all that much from the Adam West series, which first arrived on the scene over 40 years ago.
  • I don't actually believe he read any of the All-Star Batmans outside of issue #5, which he quotes from several times in the article. (Hence the lack of any "Goddamn Batman" references).
  • He seems to know little, if anything, about comics because he seem to think the grim and gritty Batman is something new. It really isn't that far from the Batman appearing in the regular books pre-Infinite Crisis.
  • And, by the way, Miller wasn't the first person to indicate Batman has psychological problems. Hell, he dresses up as a bat because his parents were killed! If that isn't a psychologically troubled person, I don't know what is.
  • All-Star Batman is really, really bad. I mean, not in a "so bad it's good" way either. It's completely and wholly bad.
  • It's Batman and Frank Miller. I mean, my inlaws are in their 60's and 70s and they know who Batman and Frank Miller are. If it was Jason Aaron and Ghost Rider, I'd be more impressed.
  • Does anybody seriously think this article will improve readership? Like all the investment bankers and stock brokers are going to rush into a comic store after reading this to pick up some new releases? I doubt it.

Jeez, no kidding.  I don't understand why he just wants to crap all over his legacy.  While The Dark Knight Returns and Batman: Year One weren't perfect, they certainly weren't the train wrecks that The Dark Knight Strikes Again and All Star Batman were.  Both books have these extreme, cartoony characterizations and it seems clear that Miller hates comics and their conventions now.  I kind of wish they could jettison Miller and let someone else take over this book.  I'm sure Denny O'Neil would love a crack at this again.

  2. The investment bankers will run to their local comic shop if you promise them that the books will be poly-bagged and are instantly collectable!

    Welcome back, early 1990s!!!!
