My friend Jeff is having a week dedicated to the woeful awfulness that is Gambit over at Conditional Axe. During this weeklong tribute to the incomprehensibly popular Cajun, Jeff put out a call to revamp the Cajun. A nasty stomach virus prevented me from doing this until now. His pal Erin did a quite nice revamp herself. So, saving the not necessarily best for the not necessarily last, I will offer my own revamp now.
Costume:
Lose everything except the trenchcoat, but make it black. No longer would it be that butterscotch pudding color.
What would the rest of his costume be? A suit. A black suit. Black dress pants, black blazer, black shirt, black tie. This will tie in to his new, revamped backstory, which I will reveal below.
Only of thing would be is to add Chuck Taylors as his shoe of choice for their adding of stealth, and Ray-ban's to hide is eyes, which will look essentially the same.
Reason for the change? Well, his typical outfit is ugly. Way too busy. Way too much going on. It needs to be dialed way back. And what better wat to stand out on a team wearing yellow spandex and white bustiers than just wearing a suit.
Background:
Lose the Assassin/Thieves Guild thing. Now, there is only The Guild. It has been around since the Middle ages, it is global and it is pretty scary. If there is something you want stolen or someone you want killed, come to the guild. They'll do it for you for a price, and they never fail. And they'll go through any lengths, spend any amount, take any length of time to get what you want. You want to steal something from a bank? They'll put an operative in as a teller, let him work his way up to bank manager, and then have him steal the stuff out of the bank with the keys the bank board gave him.
Gambit is an assassin in The Guild. I think he works better as a killer because, well, he can charge up playing cards and make them explode. Doesn't that skill seem more handy to an assassin than a thief?
His "family" has been involved with the Guild since its foundation. He supposedly is the seventh generation of LeBeau who worked for the organization. I say suppossedly be cause there is mystery surrounding him. Some say he is immortal, some say he's the devil himself. Some say that he is the original LeBeau, and just pretends every 20 years or so to "retire" and bring in his "son".
Due to this mystery and his family's history, Gambit has a lot of sway in the organization. He only accepts the jobs he wants, and usually, his targets deserve what's coming to them He targets only the bad guys, the evil. . He is the killer of the killers, and he IS the best at what he does. No LeBeau has ever failed on their mission, Not once.
Hence the black outfit. When Gambit comes after you, you are ready for your funeral. And he's wearing black for the occassion.
Why is he in the X-Men:
He's gotten a new assignment. One of the X-Men is his target. Who is the X-Man who is evil enough that Gambit would take the assignment? What did they do? Who took out the hit? We don't know. It would be a mystery.
Thanks for the assist with Gambit Week, Bill. Hope you're feeling better!
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of Gambit as an inexorable force of murder. I wouldn't associate it with him out of the box, but your revamp is a really cool update to his basic concept.
